Reiki in Japan

Fortunately the System of Reiki survived in Japan in spite of Japan’s tumultuous history in the middle of the last century.

Reiki continued to develop in Japan through the work of Usui’s students and colleagues. One of the most notable of these was Toshihiro Eguchi. (1873-1946?)

It is apparent that although somewhat younger,

he and Usui were close friends.

It is thought that Eguchi was Usui’s leading student who brought a strong Shinto background into the discussions and formulation of the System of Reiki.

Eguchi taught a great deal of students in the period before WW11. He also published a number of books including:

Te No Hira Ryoji Nyumon (introduction to healing with the palms), and

Te No Hira Ryoji Wo Kataru (a story of healing with the palms).

Reiki was also continued as the result of a Reiki Organisation in Japan known as the

Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.

The Gakka was apparently started following Usui’s death and was heavily influenced by members of the navy who had previously learnt the system from Usui Mikao.
