Towards A Japanese Perspective
Developments over the last five years have highlighted to us the need
to reconnect with the original system of Reiki.
That is to say, to reflect as accurately as possible the teachings and techniques
of the founder of the system, Usui Mikao.
The following article submitted to Inner Self gives more insight.
Reiki A Lot More Than Palm Healing
When we think of Reiki we traditionally think hands on healing or energy rebalancing.
We perhaps envisage a Reiki practitioner placing hands on or above a body
to help a client rebalance their energy system.
This is a wonderful part of Reiki but it was not the sole focus
of its founder Usui Mikao.
Usui, a Tendai Buddhist, spent decades developing his personal practice
as part of his own spiritual formation.
He spent much time reading, researching and contemplating techniques (kiko, qigong)
and approaches that would lead to healthy thinking and living.
Usui recognised that Ki (Qi, Prana) is the universal life force
that permeates all things.
The underpinning belief of Reiki is that the individual can raise his/her ki energy
to a higher vibrational level through constant (nin) practice.
The Chinese call this higher level spirit energy Ling Qi.
The direct translation of this into Japanese is Rei ki.
The Key to Reiki is Personal Practice
As Usui decided to share his methods he structured what was to be taught and when.
We all have the ability to develop our ki, however the System of Reiki developed by Usui and now authentically taught by a number of Reiki Masters/Teachers helps us to safely and purposefully develop this higher ki.
Through a series of levels and associated exercises and activities, including meditation, ki building breathing methods (kiko), and work with symbols, mantras and chants
the student can tap into this wonderful energy .
A Reiki Master / Teacher Assists the Student
A Reiki course enables the student to begin a journey towards personal balance & healing.
It is the constant personal practice that enables the student access to Reiki ..
the higher vibrational Ki.
If we apply these techniques sequentially and constantly to ourselves we are then able to share this Reiki with others through palm healing (Tenohira). This is the key to Reiki
