The System of Reiki
When many of us first learnt Reiki we saw it as a hands on healing method.
All of the teaching focused around hand positions, history and symbols.
Research over the last decade though has identified more than this in Usui Sensei’s personal practice and teaching.
The key difference with the current understanding of Reiki is the underlying importance of personal practice. It is understood that Usui Mikao spent many years in spiritual reflection and during this time he developed many skills including meditation and breathing techniques.
He was of course influenced by Buddhism,Shintoism and Daoism and many of his learnings came from those traditions.
A number of writers/researchers have written about Reiki as a System. Perhaps the clearest of these descriptions comes from the writings of Bronwen and Frans Stiene in their Book
The Japanese Art of Reiki
In this book, a must read for all serious practitioners they outline
Five Elements of Reiki.
Gokai or the five precepts or principles.
Kokyu Ho or Japanese breathing techniques
Tenohira (te’ate) or palm healing
Shirushi & Jumon or Symbols and Mantras (and chanting)
Attunements/Reiju or attunments /blessings.
